Our Firefly Habitat

What This Place Is

In 2026 we are setting up an area of our farm that will be managed as a firefly habitat.

Fireflies depend on:

  • Darkness at night

  • Moist soil and seasonal wet areas

  • Leaf litter and undisturbed ground

Because this section naturally stays wet and shaded, it is intentionally protected rather than drained, mowed, or cleared.

Why Fireflies Need Habitats Like This

Fireflies spend most of their lives on or near the ground.

They rely on:

  • Leaf litter for shelter and overwintering

  • Moist soil for larvae development

  • Low light levels for communication and mating

When land is over-lit, overly tidy, or frequently disturbed, fireflies disappear.

This habitat is designed to avoid those pressures.

How This Area Is Managed

We support this habitat by:

  • Limiting artificial lighting

  • Leaving leaf litter in place

  • Protecting seasonal wet zones

  • Avoiding chemical treatments

Management is low-impact and focused on long-term soil and insect health.
